New Social Networks I'm Not Signing Up To (Just Yet)

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

As a social media specialist, I'm always on the lookout for the newest social networks.  It may take time for any new social network to gain a substantial number of people using it.  But at least signing up for an account would let you explore how it looked like when it started and the more important reason, reserving and securing your own username/handle/account which is handy if it does get popular.

So I checked out a list of some social networks to look out in 2014 based on this list entitled "6 Social Networks to Watch in 2014" and it seems that I'm sticking to my current social media platforms.  Here's why:
  1. Sportslobster (https://sportlobster.com/) - Its strength lies on sports enthusiasts and real time updates.  The only sport I'm interested in watching is wrestling and we don't get any live feed here in the Philippines.  I'll just end up reading spoilers and would rather watch it than read about it.
  2. Shots of Me (http://shots.me/) - I have nothing against Justin Bieber, even if he's funded this social network.  I have nothing against selfies either.  It's just that this app is available only on iOS devices.
  3. Nextdoor (https://nextdoor.com/) - Interesting concept.  Help your neighbors reporting unusual activity and  learn your neighboorhood better from people who actually live near you.  So why am I not going to use this?  Currently only available in the U.S.
  4. Impossible (http://www.impossible.com/) - Helping others sounds like a good idea.  The social good samaritan, you'll be.  But I got this error message when I tried to access it via the web.  Looks like for now, viewing it is "impossible."
  5. Medium (https://medium.com/) - Looks promising.  Large fonts and lots of space in the interface but I find a lack of navigation buttons a hindrance to leisurely hopping from one post to the next.  I'll rank this "medium" for now.
I'll stick with whatever Klout includes in their ranks for now.
